If you are interested in another design to include in a butterfly afghan, here's the link to that chart: Manto Butterfly

Butterfly Afghan Assembly

Edge each completed square in a row of single crochet stitch in white or your choice of color. (At each corner, work 2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc in the corner stitch.)

Diagrams are given below for suggested assembly in two afghan sizes. You may have your own ideas on how you would like to complete your afghan. You might, for instance, prefer to make multiple squares of each butterfly species and you may want to decide on your own placement of squares.

Try a trial arrangement of the squares by laying them all out according to one of the diagrams below, then move them around according to your own preference to decide on your own final square arrangement. This is your own special afghan!

Sample Placement of Squares

Placement of squares #1 - #13 are shown on the diagram. All remaining squares (squares that are blank on the diagram) are #6 - Leaves. For this 52 1/2" square size afghan, you will need to make one each of squares #1 - #5, one each of squares #7 - 11, one of square #13; also 4 squares of #12 Morning Glory and 10 squares of pattern #6 Leaves.

On the pattern for #6, the leaves are randomly placed so that all the squares are crocheted the same way, but when assembling them, the squares may be alternately turned on their sides or upside down, to give a more random effect to the leaves portion of the afghan.
With crochet hook, slip stitch the squares together; or sew squares together, with a whipstitch, using large eye yarn needle, with co-ordinating yarn color.

For a larger afghan:

Placement of squares #1 - #13 are shown on the diagram. All remaining squares (squares that are blank on diagram) are #6 - Leaves. For this 52 1/2" x 73 1/2" size afghan, you will need to make one each of squares #1 - #5, one each of squares #7 - 11, one of square #13; also 4 squares of #12 Morning Glory and 20 squares of pattern #6 Leaves.

On the pattern for #6, the leaves are randomly placed so that all the squares are crocheted the same way, but when assembling them, the squares may be alternately turned on their sides or upside down, to give a more random effect to the leaves portion of the afghan.

Ways to Join Squares - Photo How-to's

When all squares are assembled into the afghan, you may wish to edge it with your favorite crocheted edging.

Enjoy your new afghan!
