I designed this Mexican Silverspot Butterfly design in 1997, as a color chart. I've now recharted it to be worked in filet crochet also. You can use this same chart to cross-stitch this design in solid color silhouette on a single crochet or afghan stitch background.

Working the Chart in Filet Crochet
For a 4 dc mesh, beginning chain is 121, plus chain 3, (which will count as first dc of first row), plus chain 2 (which is chain-2 of first open mesh) for a total starting chain of 126 chains. Begin by working a double crochet in the 9th chain from the hook. Follow chart for placement of solid mesh and open mesh for each row. Chart is worked starting at the bottom right; work first row right to left. Second row is worked left to right. Continue alternating row directions in this same manner, following chart. In the example above, chart was worked with white squares as open mesh and black squares as solid mesh. Antennae: The blue lines on the chart indicate suggested placement for the antennae. On finished piece, attach thread or yarn at spot that will be the top of one antenna. Crochet a chain long enough to reach to the top of the butterfly's head. Slip stitch in the spot which will be the bottom of that antenna. Slip stitch in next stitch to reach spot where next antenna will start. Crochet a chain of the same length as the first antenna. Slip stitch at the spot that will be the top of this antenna. End off. Weave in ends.

Approximate finished sizes (for each square) in filet crochet (once through the chart, worked in 4 dc mesh):
With size 5 thread: (205 yards) and a size US 4 steel hook, finished size is about 11.1 inches x 12.7 inches.
With size 10 thread: (182 yards) and a size US 7 steel hook, finished size is about 9.2 inches x 10 inches.
With size 20 thread: (171 yards) and a size US 9 steel hook, finished size is about 8.8 inches x 9.6 inches.
With size 30 thread: (160 yards) and a size US 11 steel hook, finished size is about 8.4 inches x 9.2 inches.
With fingering/baby weight yarn: (400 yards) and a size US F hook, finished size is about 28 inches x 28.8 inches.
With sport weight yarn: (464 yards) and a size US G hook, finished size is about 32 inches x 32.8 inches.
With worsted weight yarn: (528 yards) and a size US I hook, finished size is about 36 inches x 36.8 inches.

Gauge:
With size 5 thread: 5 squares = 1.4 inches, 5 rows = 1.6 inches
With size 10 thread: 5 squares = 1.2 inches, 5 rows = 1.3 inches
With size 20 thread: 5 squares = 1.1 inches, 5 rows = 1.2 inches
With size 30 thread: 5 squares = 1 inch, 5 rows = 1.1 inches
With fingering/baby weight yarn: 5 squares = 3.5 inch, 5 rows = 3.6 inches
With sport weight yarn: 5 squares = 4 inch, 5 rows = 4.1 inches
With worsted weight yarn: 5 squares = 4.5 inch, 5 rows = 4.6 inches

Here's an example of this chart done as a solid color silhouette cross-stitch on a single crochet background. Starting chain is 41 chains for single crochet or 40 chains for afghan stitch. Crochet 40 rows. Using a large-eye yarn needle, do cross-stitch in yarn of the same weight that you used to crochet the background. Use crochet thread to make the antennae (one long stitch for each antenna works fine). Read the chart as: one square on the chart equals one single crochet stitch (or one afghan stitch).
